The Haudenosaunee Development Institute (HDI) serves as the governing body responsible for overseeing land development across all Haudenosaunee territory. Founded in 2007 by the Haudenosaunee Confederacy Chiefs Council (HCCC), HDI ensures that any projects undertaken within these lands are executed in accordance with the Haudenosaunee Nation’s longstanding cultural, environmental, and spiritual values. Headquartered in Six Nations of the Grand River, the Institute operates as both a regulator and advocate for the preservation of Haudenosaunee sovereignty, natural resources, and sacred sites.
Through the devising and implementation of landmark initiatives like the Haudenosaunee Green Plan and the Haudenosaunee Development Protocol, HDI has established comprehensive policies to guide the use of the Nation’s land. These frameworks place a great deal of emphasis on environmental preservation by requiring developers to submit detailed proposals that assess potential impacts on wetlands, watersheds, and endangered species before beginning any work. HDI also mandates that any archaeological discoveries on Haudenosaunee land be handled with the utmost respect and care, acting as guarantor of the protection of ancestral artifacts and Indigenous historical sites.
